Question by Adam H: Upgrading my Desktop?
I am trying to upgrade my PC. I play a lot of games on it, especially strategy games like the Total War franchise that has thousands of troops on the screen at once. What should I upgrade next.
What I started with
AMD Phenom 9550 2.2ghz quad core
6gb Ram
nvidia geforce 9600gt 512mb
300w psu
640gb SATA 7200 RPM HDD
What I have now
AMD Phenom 9850 2.5ghz quad core Black Edition (will end up overclocking)
6gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 285 GTX 1gb
650w PSU
640gb SATA 7200 RPM HDD
I was thinking about upgrading my ram but then saw many articles about anything over 6 being pretty much over kill and not helping performance. Many recommended Solid State Drives but I’m not sure what to do to help out with what I am using it for.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. When I try to play the newer total war games with everything turned up it kinda jumps a little bit in some of the towns and that is what I am trying to rid of.

Answer by Jim >Which version of Windows 7 are you using? Home Premium 64 bit can only handle up to 8 gigs of RAM. You have to have Professional or Ultimate editions to handle more than 8 gigs of RAM. The absolute maximum limit of any 32 bit operating system is 4 Gigs of RAM. So depending on which version and type of operating system, more than 4 gigs could be a waste. And, on some others versions, more than 8 Gigs could be a waste. Most games will run comfortably on the mere 4 gigs of RAM.
